Remember you are trying to create the illusion of a bookcase. The woodwork around the edge of the door (architrave) or wall space should represent the top and sides of the bookcase. A strip of wood or skirting board at the base (e.g. 100mm or 4” high) is worth thinking about to represent the base of the bookcase. (It can also act as a kick plate.) All surrounds and false shelves should have the same stain / paint / varnish effect to look like one piece of furniture. You may need to think about the thickness of the door being accommodated so that it opens without binding.

False shelves antique and vellum

The maximum thickness (depth) of antique or vellum faux books is 25mm so we generally recommend 25mm sq strips of timber for false shelves – plain or moulded face as desired. Our normal arrangement of faux books will rest within these dimensions. If space is restricted eg sliding or folding doors slipping into a recess, please let us know so that we can restrict the choice of faux books to those which have a maximum thickness to match your dimensions.

False shelves paperback

The maximum thickness (depth) of paperback books is 30mm to include the thichness of the thin MDF backing board so we generally recommend 28 – 30 mm sq strips of timber for false shelves. –The height of the plain or moulded face as desired is usually 25 mm. Our normal arrangement of paperback books will rest within these dimensions. If space is restricted eg sliding or folding doors slipping into a recess, please let us know and we will see if we can accommodate your maximum dimensions.

Colours & Heights

Once we have worked to your dimensions to select the number of rows of faux books required, we will create a ‘mock up’ of your project in our workshops of each of your rows of books. These will be selected according to your choice of;

Antique Leather Look

Colours - traditionally these are shades of tans / brown, burgundy red and forest library green
Titles - from our wide range of panels
Sizes - range from 6" (160mm) to 17" (430mm) in height

Vellum Goatskin Look

Colours - either plain gilded, pastel labels & gilded or bright labels & gilded
Titles - from our wide range of panels
Sizes - range from 6” (160 mm) to 17” (430 mm) in height

Real Paperback

Sizes – normal size is 8” (200mm)
Titles - are a random selection from a rich assortment provided to us by an exclusive arrangement with various publishers. This rescues interesting and thought provoking book spines prior to out of print books being recycled.
Sizes - the maximum height per row achieved by laying some books horizontally along the top of a row of vertical paperback books is 10” (250 mm)

How do I order faux books

Decide which you want - the antique leather or vellum or paperback look to go to the ‘how to commission’ page to see what information we require. At any stage we are happy for you to email or pick up the phone to ask us for any help or advice.

You tell us the overall area you want covered in faux books, we work out what would be a suitable num,ber of rows of books to cover the space and do a mock up of each row. We send each row of books packed separately with an overall plan. This is all at no extra cost. We do all the hard work for you.

What do the panels of antique faux books look like – what will I receive

To make sure each row of books fits your dimensions exactly, we send complete panels plus part panels or single spines to ensure a perfect fit. Panels are are approximately 300mm wide and graduate in height as shown (faux book panels) . This is a sample of the many hundreds of faux book titles that we produce.

How will the goods be sent

Each row is independently checked against the plan before despatch to check they are the correct width and height. Each row of books is packed securely in bubble wrap and despatched with an overall plan of the layout.

Delivery arrangements

We use a courier delivery service – usually UPS or Interlink. Both services require goods to be signed for. Please advise us if you need a phone call or email to arrange a convenient delivery day / destination to accommodate this security requirement.
